About Us

Our mission is to create quality services and compassionate relationships that engage, instruct and inspire. Through education and advocacy, we empower people to new understandings and actions so that they feel hope, acquire ability and find satisfaction in their lives. 

Advocacy
In its original role, MHAC was solely an advocacy organization, striving to change the public's view of persons with mental illness, and fighting for the rights and dignity of people in need of mental health care. More than one hundred years later, we are still fighting. Our public policy committee finds those areas of injustice, neglect or indignity around which we can educate legislators and affect change in people's lives.

Education
Learning is the key to unlocking the potential inside of everyone and serves as the cornerstone of everything we do. Whether through our Older Adult Workshops, our "Kids on the Block" puppet shows, or our direct care services, we believe people will grow and thrive if they are provided the information, tools, and skill-building opportunities to do so.

Service
We help more than nine hundred Connecticut residents with severe pervasive mental illnesses receive residential, vocational, psychosocial, and case management services in six communities. We have six residential programs including one for persons who are Deaf or hearing impaired.

Our programs take place in Stamford, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Torrington, Danbury and West Hartford.

Residential programs serve adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses. Our dedicated staff provide case management, social and vocational rehabilitation, and 24/7 supports so that their life in the community is safe, healthy, and thriving.

Our Choices programs in Waterbury  and West Hartford use an evidence based practice model of supported employment to help clients return to school or jobs. The Independence Center is a psychosocial program in downtown Waterbury giving support and assistance to members seven days a week.

Accreditation
Our treatment programs are accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. When the service or program you choose is CARF-accredited, it means your provider has passed an in-depth review of its services. It is your assurance that the provider meets rigorous CARF guidelines for service and quality -- a qualified endorsement that your provider conforms to nationally and internationally recognized service standards and is focused on delivering the most favorable results for you.
