Like other health problems, mental illness can affect anyone. Each year, upwards of one in four people in the US will have a diagnosable disorder. That's nearly 60 million people. But recovery is a reality.

At the Mental Health Association of Connecticut, We work for everyone's mental health by creating quality services and compassionate relationships that engage, instruct and inspire. Through education and advocacy, we empower people to new understandings and actions so that they feel hope, acquire ability, and find meaning in their lives.

We're a statewide not-for-profit agency that provides direct services to adults with severe and persistent mental illness, presents workshops about mental health, and mounts reform efforts to help shape state policies and laws.

We've worked for over 100 years to bring about effective treatments, enlightened ideas, and a just system of care so that people recovering their mental health can get back to happy and productive lives in the community  MORE >

NO HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH

As the momentum mounts accross the US to relook at our entire health care system, MHAC and other advocates are working to make sure that mental health coverage is a part of any reform plan. Mental health must be seen as integral to overall health.

Ever since 1948, the World Health Organization maintains that health is "a complete state of physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."  How common is a Co-Occurring Disorder?

It is more common than you might imagine. According to a report published by the Journal of the American Medical Association: 37% of alcohol abusers and 53% of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness.
